The etiquette of toy swapping: a friendly guide for first-timers

Swapping toys with another family is a small, ordinary kindness — but if you've never done it before, it's fair to wonder what the unwritten rules are. Here's our honest, no-stress guide.

Before the swap

• Be honest about condition. A toy doesn't need to be brand-new to swap, but "gently used" should mean gently used — missing pieces, cracks, or heavy wear should be mentioned upfront, not discovered at handoff.
• Give a real sense of age range, not just "for kids." Most parents know exactly what stage their child is at and appreciate knowing whether something will land or sit unused.
• Respond in reasonable time. If someone's interested in your listing, a few days is a friendly window — leaving someone hanging for weeks isn't fair to a family who might've found the toy elsewhere.

At the meetup

• Public, convenient spots work best — a park, a café, outside a school at pickup. There's no need to overthink this; most swaps are refreshingly quick and normal.
• A quick look-over is completely fine, and expected. Nobody should feel awkward checking that a toy matches its description before the swap is final.
• Bring your kid if it makes sense — for a lot of families, watching their child hand over a toy they've outgrown to a younger kid who's excited about it is genuinely one of the nicer parts of the whole thing.

After the swap

• A quick thank-you goes a long way, especially in a community-based system where you'll likely cross paths with this family again.
• If something wasn't as described, say so kindly and directly rather than just quietly never swapping with that person again — most mismatches are honest mistakes, not bad faith.

The one big rule underneath all of this

Treat it the way you'd want to be treated if the toy were coming into your home, not going out of it. Almost every other piece of good swap etiquette follows naturally from that one.
